Dogs jump up for a number of reasons.
- Attention! They want it.
- To get closer to you.
- Excitement, they are happy to see you!
- Learned behaviour, cute when it was a puppy but not when they are knocking the children over.
Jumping up can be managed.
- SIT - Basic obedience - ask dog to sit before saying
hello or patting. If he starts to jump go inside and try again in a
few minutes.
- BE CONSISTENT - Make sure the whole family follow the rules.
- WAIT
Turn your body to the side arms crossed and ignore any jumping up. WAIT
- when he stops say quietly and calmly “good dog”, eventually you will
get to pat him.
- WALKS - by giving the dog plenty of exercise, walking or socializing in groups.
